Golden Circle & South Coast Tour

The Golden Circle & South Coast Tour

In this tour, you will combine two of Iceland’s most popular day tour routes, The Golden Circle and South Coast. This tour allows you to visit some of Iceland’s most stunning sights, like the historical and geological wonder Þingvellir National Park. Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss (golden waterfall).

At Thingvellir, can you see where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart. Þingvellir was also the setting of the world’s oldest parliament. At Geysir geothermal area is Strokkur, the giant geyser. Strokkur erupts every 5 to 10 minutes throwing a column of water up to 20 meters in a thrilling display of nature’s forces. Gullfoss (Golden waterfall), created by the river Hvítá, is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Iceland. You will visit the majestic Skógafoss at Skógar and the Beautiful Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall that you can walk behind and through to the other side. The black sand beach Reynisfjara where the Atlantic Ocean hammers the coastline with all its power.

The Black basalt has been shaped into unique, different formations, most notably the famous Reynisdrangar.

Thingvellir National Park

At Thingvellir National Park, Iceland gave birth to its first parliament and was the first democratic national parliament in the world. It’s called Althing (Alþing). Therefore, it’s Iceland’s most important and historical and geological place. The parliament was founded in the year 930 AD and is the oldest parliament in the world still fully operating.

At Thingvellir, you can see where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet and how spectacularly these plates have drifted apart. At the slow and non-violent speed, the plates drift apart at the rate of 2 cm (0.79 in) per year. This process is steadily forming the island’s markable landscape over millions of years.

Geysir – the original geyser and Strokkur

You are in for a treat since The Great Geysir is the oldest documented geyser in all of Europe. Many other languages have adopted the geyser word (géiser, Geysir, gejzir, etc.). But the word Geysir comes from the Icelandic verb “geysa,” which means “to gush.” It is also the first printed described Geysir in all modern Europe.

The highly active Hot Spring Area of Geysir and the boiling mud pits are great for shooting photos. The old and The Great Geysir can hurl boiling water up to an average height of 70m (229ft). Even though The Great Geysir isn’t as active as it used to be, it has a brother called Strokkur, which spouts boiling water 30m (100ft) up in the air every few minutes. There is also a newly opened exhibits and informative presentation Geysir Center which is open all year round.

Gullfoss Waterfall

The next stop on this fantastic tour is the majestic Gullfoss Waterfall, which is undoubtedly one of Iceland’s unique and famous waterfalls. The name translates directly to the Golden Falls. It comes from the glacial river Hvítá. The Gullfoss Waterfall drops amazingly down two giant steps, 11m (36ft) and 22m (71ft), and then distributes into a 2,5 km (1.6 mi) long crevasse. The crevasse was formed at the end of the Ice Age by catastrophic flood waves. Each year it is lengthened by 25cm (9.8ft) because of the constant water erosion.

Skogafoss Waterfall

Driving east along the cliffs of Eyjajökull to the magnificent Skogafoss waterfall. You will get the chance to take great photos and take a small hike up to the top of Skogafoss to witness the power from the waterfall above. It drops down 25 m (80ft), and it’s one of Iceland’s largest waterfall. If you visited while the sun is shining, you’d be able to see beautiful rainbows from the strong spray of mist.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

One of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls is, without a doubt, the Seljalandsfoss waterfall due to the reason that it’s possible to walk behind the waterfall and get great pictures and experience the power, mist, and the beautiful view behind it.

The Black Beach Reynisfjara

The Black Lava Beach is formed long basalt cliffs or columnar igneous rock formed at the cooling surface will tend to be propagated down the lava as it cools, creating long, geometric columns. Thus, as lava cools to form basalt, it may crack in a hexagonal (or other) shape and include columns. Reynisfjara Black Beach has mighty waves that have helped shaped the fantastic cliffs—making them one of the area’s most sought-after attractions to visit. The cliffs bare many interesting birds; among other species, you might see fulmar, guillemot, razorbill, gannet, and various types of seagulls. By summertime, the cliffs are filled with puffins.
